  Editorial

Dear Members,

With two weeks to go, preparations for the 2008 Conference in Tours are almost complete. The provisional conference programme is available and the conference proceedings are already in production. We have again increased the number of workshops this year to try to stimulate greater interaction and networking between our Academics, Business Leaders and Consultants. Similarly the composition of the plenary speakers reflects this goal.

I can report that we received abstracts from 267 people wanting to present this year. In 2007 we received just over 200 so this is the sixth year in a row that has seen an increase. The benefit of this is that the review process could be correspondingly more rigorous to increase the general standard of the sessions. There will be 130 presentations in Tours and we are predicting the total number of delegates to be about 230. Again this is the sixth consecutive yearly increase. We hope that with the careful selection of keynote speakers, the increased number of workshops and more selective review process the conference will increase in quality as well as quantity every year.

Like last year, 36 nationalities from six continents will be represented, with the majority being from Europe. Delegate organisations include well-known multinational organisations, SMEs, educational institutions, research centres, public agencies and consulting companies. The most numerous group is educational institutions and the group with the biggest growth is the private sector. Unsurprisingly, given the theme of the conference, the most popular topics relate to Open Innovation and its management, measurement, tools, networks and implementation. This is not surprising given its current prevalence in both academia and industry.

The social side of ISPIM Conferences is again very important and I believe that this year’s social events will be excellent. Sunday features a welcome reception, town tour and a taster of local cuisine in four local restaurants. The gala dinner on the Monday is at the famous Chateau Royal d'Amboise and on Tuesday the imposing town hall is the setting for a gastronomic education so you should come away knowing a lot more about "vins et leurs propres mets"!. With the exception of Amboise, all events are within 10-15 minutes walk of the central hotels. All cuisine, music, activities and venues reflect French culture, gastronomy and history. More details are available from the conference programme.

On a different note, June will see the formation of the new ISPIM Advisory Board which will replace the current ISPIM Fellows. Dick Marsh has acted as the Head Fellow since the formation of the ISPIM Fellows and he has now decided to retire after many years supporting ISPIM. We are all extremely grateful to him for his fantastic support and amazing energy. The new Advisory Board, with Sally Davenport at its head, includes Dick Marsh, Mai Anttila, Markku Tuominen, Kazuyoshi Ishii, Takaya Ichimura, Jens Arleth, Desai Narasimhalu, Eric Stevens, Jeff Butler, Bruno Woeran and Michael Dell. Knut Holt is of course still Honorary Chairman.

I am also happy to say that we have finally updated the ISPIM constitution to reflect current practice. For this reason the VPs are now Directors and the President is now the Executive Director. Elections are still every two years, but the elections are on a team, rather than an individual basis to provide for greater continuity. And for the first time ever, ISPIM has appointed a part-time employee to deal with daily matters as Secretary General.

I look forward to seeing you in Tours on the 15th June.

Dr Steffen Conn
Secretary General

1st ISPIM Innovation Symposium, Singapore

The 1st ISPIM Innovation Symposium - Managing Innovation in a Connected World - will be held in Singapore on 14-17 December 2008. Organised by ISPIM together with Singapore Management University, this symposium will bring together academics, business leaders, consultants and other professionals involved in innovation management. The aim of this symposium is to stimulate discussion and connect people from different backgrounds and cultures. The format will include interactive workshops and discussion panels together with academic and practitioner presentations. As with all ISPIM events, this symposium will provide excellent networking opportunities together with a taste of local culture.

Globalisation of technology and the strong interconnectivity of the different nations through reliable telecommunications has given rise to a significant movement towards outsourcing and off-shoring.  Further, the escalation of the cost of carrying out all R&D and innovation in-house and the availability of intellectual capital with access to global networks have encouraged firms to embrace open innovation principles even if, in some cases, somewhat reluctantly.  Open innovation can be interpreted at several levels including, across people, across divisions of a company located in different places, across different organisations and across countries.  Managing innovation in such a connected world is something new to several organisations.  It is therefore important for academics, businesses and consulting firms to understand the challenges faced in managing innovations in such a connected world and to be able to find the solutions to harness the value that can be generated by the intellectual capital available in the far corners of our globe.  ISPIM has always focused on themes that address cutting edge issues and managing innovations in a connected world is a pressing theme.

Academics and Practitioners are encouraged to submit papers/outlines and workshop/discussion topics related to the symposium theme including but not limited to the subareas listed below:

  • Borderless innovation

  • Collaborative R&D for innovation

  • Idea generation and creativity

  • Innovation policy

  • Measuring and managing innovation

  • Methods and tools for innovation

  • Networks and clusters of innovation

  • Open innovation

Important Submission Deadlines:

10 September 2008: Academic Paper Abstracts/Practitioner Presentation Outlines or Workshop/Discussion Panel Topics
10 November 2008: Final submissions (including slides, profiles & photos) together with registration and payment

HICSS-42

In an initiative started by ISPIM member Desai Narasimhalu, ISPIM is again running the minitrack on Innovation and Innovation Management at the Hawaiian International Conference on Systems Sciences (HICSS) that will take place in Waikoloa, Big Island, Hawaii from 5-8 January 2009.

This minitrack addresses issues at the crossroads of Technology, Markets and Firms.  We invite new models of both theory and practice in innovation and innovation management. We are particularly interested in studies and research that show how technology was a key enabler for the creation of market and business innovations. We are very interested in panels and tutorials that can present recent examples that highlight both theory and practice in Innovation and Innovation Management.

The deadline for papers is 15th June 2008 and further details on the minitrack can be found at www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_42/minitracks/os-iim.htm.

We look forward to seeing you in Hawaii.

Co-chairs: Desai Narasimhalu, Marko Torkkeli, Iain Bitran

Input to New Book/Innovation Resources

Dear Friends,

As some of you know I’ve been working for many years on textbooks to support learning about managing innovation.  It’s been a long process of continuous innovation, where we have been listening to ideas and feedback, incorporating different kinds of resources and in different ways trying to improve the book and website as a resource for students, teachers, policy makers and practising managers.  In the process we’ve added a variety of resources apart from the written text – for example the website has a rich set of cases, tools, suggested teaching outlines, assessment questions and some video/audio material.

We’re now working on a new edition of the ‘Managing innovation’ book (see www.managing-innovation.com  for details of the current one).  One of the things we’d really like to change this time is to make this even more of an ‘open source’ project, bringing in your ideas, resources, cases, tools, stories, video, audio – any material which you use and are prepared to share.  Our publishers, John Wiley, have configured the website to be an open resource and the idea is to make this a platform from which we can configure materials to suit specific needs, locations, etc.

This link will take you to the new edition website where you can see what we have in mind and get involved if you are willing www.wiley.com/go/innovation.

I’ve also been experimenting with a wiki around innovation resources (which includes a link to the Wiley project) – again you’d be very welcome to join in.  The URL is  http://innovationresources.wetpaint.com.

Look forward to hearing – and working – with you.

Meanwhile all good wishes,

John

New Russian Connection & Innovation Conference

ISPIM members Dmitry Khomutsky and Yevgeny Sinyakov are organising The First International Conference of Professionals in Innovation Management: Russia 2008 which will take place in Moscow from 26-27 June 2008.

The conference has been conceived to discuss important innovation management issues that have recently become of great relevance in the emerging markets such as Russia. The bridge between innovation theory and innovation practice is still too often omitted in the emerging markets, and academic developments in the innovation management are often deployed ineffectively.

The goal of the Conference is to help decrease the gap between innovation theory and innovation practice by discussing modern models, methodologies, techniques and approaches that could be successfully implemented by businesses in their practice.

ISPIM is delighted to support this conference and Iain Bitran, ISPIM's Executive Director, was in Moscow recently and met with Dmitry and Yevgeny to record a welcome message that will be broadcast during the opening session. We looking forward to continuing this relationship for many years to come.

New Event in Luxembourg

The success that was achieved with the 2004 and 2006 editions of the Luxembourgish Colloquium on knowledge economy within an European perspective leads us to the launch of a third, grand Colloquium En route vers Lisbonne. This colloquium is under the auspices of the Luxembourg Ministry of Economy and Foreign Trade, and endorsed by the Service Central de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques (Statec), by the Observatoire de la Compétitivité, and by the Public Research Centre CRP Henri Tudor.

This third Colloquium will take place 4 through 5 December 2008 in Luxembourg.

The Lisbon strategy, launched in 2000, keeps on raising numerous questions on the constitution elements of a most dynamic and competitive knowledge economy worldwide in 2010, with a capacity for sustainable economic growth accompanied by a quantitative and qualitative improvement of employment, and by stronger social cohesion.

A soft evaluation at half-time brought forward the variances maintained or augmented in terms of productivity and growth between Europe and its business partners. The challenges of an ageing population and social cohesion remain unchanged.

With the Luxembourg presidency, the Council of the European Union has re-launched the Lisbon strategy via a partnership for growth and employment, which concentrates on a reduced number of priorities. Stronger growth, and employment of better quality in higher numbers are the essential means for the success of the most general objectives on economic, social and environmental levels. Concise directions have been identified and national action plans elaborated towards the following objectives:

  • Make Europe a more attractive region for investors and workforce
  • Turn knowledge and innovation into growth factors
  • Create employment in higher numbers, and of better quality

Three years after the re-launch, a national (in Luxembourg, via audits in the Chamber of Deputies) and international assessment will be made in the course of 2008. National action plans are effectively, on different country level, the object of an intermediate evaluation, and the Council of the European Union will refer to the general assessment.

In such a context, that last colloquium before the expiry date of 2010 becomes a real importance, and confirms its necessity of providing space-time for reflection on the evaluation of active politics, on achieved and expected results, and on the difficulties of implementing actions from various, already identified, directions.

Our colloquium has always aimed at being an open forum, a meeting of scientists and decision-takers, a space where scientific analyses meet. It is also a place for debates and proposals.

Numerous instructors, from both Luxembourg and other European countries, will guide through the different sessions.

With such objectives, the colloquium sees itself as open to all, and from all methodological, disciplinary and instructive branches. Numerous instructors from Luxembourg and other countries, scientists, university staff, members of the Luxembourg administration or from international organisations have contributed to the different round tables and sessions in 2004 and 2006. The organising committee hopes to broaden the variety of instructors even further in 2008. The programme will be in relation to communications received and reviewed by the Scientific Committee.

The presentation of about thirty communications will be permitted.

Institute for Innovation & Information Productivity – Profile
By:  Michael T. LoBue, CAE, Executive Director & Member of ISPIM

Overview

The techniques for measuring performance today, from factory floors to the delivery of services to the outcomes of innovation, often fall short because they do not consider the value of new technology or provide meaningful indicators to determine tradeoffs among multiple investments. The Institute for Innovation & Information Productivity was formed in 2006 to break through outmoded, industrial-age biases and redefine knowledge economy measurements for individuals, teams, firms and nations. The IIIP develops new measurements and best practices to better understand the factors affecting business and organizational performance, studies the impact of technology, and encourages a global dialogue on improving operational results.

The IIIP is a mutual benefit, non-profit corporation.  The membership and focus are global; the headquarters are located in San Francisco, California, USA.  An elected board of directors, who are representatives of member companies, governs the Institute.

IIIP Work

The IIIP work helps to:

§
Find new, effective methods to measure knowledge-worker productivity
§  Determine the ROI from implementing innovative new processes
§
Create new metrics for measuring the investment in innovation
§
Discover cultural preferences, and possible regional impediments, in the acceptance of innovation
§
Establish the validity of long-term sustainability projects based on innovations

How IIIP is Addressing Challenges

The IIIP is working to address the challenges by:

§
Discovering and developing measurements, standards and best practices that will help organizations better understand their performance
§
Leading the applied study of information technology’s impact on innovation and performance in all sectors of global business
§
Driving collaborative events and activities that act as learning opportunities for the global community concerned with knowledge economy measures and performance
§
Publishing and promoting insights, findings and recommendations that will give member organizations and the global community new tools for measuring performance

IIIP’s Unique Approach

The IIIP is unique in the sense that it is a research collaborative driven by industry leaders with an active group of leading academic advisors.  Our academic advisors are not only leaders in their fields of study and research, but they represent a wide range of academic disciplines, and are from a diverse collection of well respected institutions from Australia, seven European nations and the United States.

The Institute is not like a typical think-tank in that it does not have a particular market or public policy agenda to promote.  For example, the Institute does not believe that “more technology will increase productivity”, or that “the market should simply increase its spending for technology”, or that “governments should undertake large-scale technology initiatives.”  Rather, the Institute would subscribe to the notion that they is probably sufficient technology in the market, but an insufficient understanding of how these investments have effected productivity and information technology contributes to innovation to improve productivity in the future.

Because the Institute’s research is funded from member dues, the research questions are practical at their core, driven by real challenges facing complex organizations of today.

The following materials are available at no cost on the IIIP web site:

The IIIP Innovation Confidence Index – 2007 Report – January 2008 – International index of Innovation Confidence
The report displays results from a survey of almost 25,000 individuals in 12 nations, presents the IIIP Innovation Confidence Index, identifies some predictors of innovation confidence, and suggests options for further research on innovation confidence.

Disruptive Communications and Attentive Productivity – March 2007 – Pilot experiment to determine impact of interruption and disruption caused by communication through voice, SMS text messaging and instant messaging.

Information Technology, Productivity and Innovation – March 2007 – This is a comprehensive review and analysis of literature over the past decade concerning information technology, productivity and innovation.  The authors looked at official measures of the value and productivity of technology, and suggested some broader alternatives for measuring the value of technology on the economy, especially including intangible assets.

The Virtual Workforce:  A Shifting Paradigm – December 2007
This paper discusses the challenges of virtual work and identifies actions that can be taken to enhance trust and foster leadership, effective collaboration, and innovation in virtual workgroups.

Making Virtual Distance Work in the Digital Age – December 2007
By itself, proper software selection cannot resolve the issues created by Virtual Distance. But by understanding the dynamics of Virtual Distance teams, organizations can select the right software to provide highly effective critical support and mitigate the inherent risks.

The website of the Institute for Innovation & Information Productivity is www.iii-p.org.
