  Editorial

Dear All,

With around a week to go, preparations for the 1st ISPIM Innovation Symposium in Singapore are almost complete. The provisional conference programme is available (www.ispim.org/symposium/programme.html) and the conference proceedings are already in production. Based on delegate feedback, we have shortened all presentations for this event to try to stimulate greater interaction and networking between our Academics, Business Leaders and Consultants. Likewise, session facilitators have been explicitly briefed to facilitate 30 minutes of discussion per session.

I can report that we received 208 outlines from people wanting to present in Singapore and that there will be 107 presentations, 5 workshops as well as 5 keynote speakers. The total number for delegates will be over 150. These figures are about a third higher than expected, which is very pleasing in these uncertain financial times.

Thirty nationalities from will be represented, with the majority being from Europe. Delegate organisations include well-known multinational organisations, SMEs, educational institutions, research centres, public agencies and consulting companies. The most numerous group is educational institutions. The most popular topics in the conference are those of measuring and managing innovation and methods and tools for innovation.

The social side of ISPIM Events has always been important and I believe that the Symposium's social events will be excellent. All cuisine, music, activities and venues reflect Singaporean culture and tradition. You should come away with an understanding of modern Singapore! Sunday includes a pre-symposium workshop, facilitators meeting and a welcome reception where the ISPIM Directors and Advisory Board Members will serve you drinks and there is also a buffet dinner. After hard work during the daytime on Monday, there is a tour around the harbour of Singapore in a Chinese Junk with an Asian buffet dinner. Following Tuesday's sessions, delegates are invited to a nine course traditional Chinese banquet prepared by the famous Wah Lok restaurant in the ballroom of the Carlton Hotel. Be prepared to give your taste buds a real treat! Finally don’t forget the 5 workshops on Wednesday and the optional Tiger Brewery Tour (http://www.secure.ispim.org/tiger/index.php) in the evening.

I look forward to seeing you in Singapore on the 14th December.

Steffen

The XX ISPIM Conference, Vienna, Austria

The 2009 ISPIM Conference - The Future of Innovation - will be held in Vienna, Austria on 21-24 June 2009. Organised by ISPIM, hosted by The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, and supported by DANUBE - European Programmes for Training, Research and Technology and Ratio Strategy & Innovation Consulting, this conference will bring together academics, business leaders, consultants and other professionals involved in innovation management. The conference format will include facilitated themed sessions for academic and practitioner presentations together with interactive workshops and discussion panels. Additionally, the conference will provide excellent networking opportunities together with a taste of local Viennese culture.

Globalisation is one of the major forces that have made innovation imperative for any industry. No organization, business nor government, can afford to leave innovation to a few motivated individuals. The future of innovation revolves around the paradox of managing the unmanageable. What processes can ensure an uninterrupted flow of new creative ideas? How can we entice all employees to be part of this effort? How do we select and develop the most promising ideas? How can we speed up this process? How do we balance radical and continuous innovation? How do we manage the dependence on internal and external knowledge sources? Finding answers to these questions is crucial for the future success of innovation.

Submissions from academics, consultants and managers on innovation-related topics are strongly encouraged and should focus on the following:

  • Commercialising and financing innovation

  • Methods and tools for innovation

  • Measuring and managing innovation

  • Organisational creativity & idea generation

  • Networks and clusters of innovation

  • Collaboration for innovation

  • Culture & diversity management in innovation

  • Entrepreneurship & intrapreneurship

  • High growth venturing

  • Innovating business models

  • Innovation training & education

  • Innovation policy and global competitiveness

  • Managing virtual innovation

  • Value creating networks and communities

Important Submission Deadlines:
31 December 2008
: Outlines Only (All Academic and Practitioner Submissions)
31 January 2009: Acceptance Notification
30 April 2009: Final Submissions (including papers, slides, profiles & photos) together with registration and payment

HICSS-42

In an initiative started by ISPIM member Desai Narasimhalu, ISPIM is again running the minitrack on Innovation and Innovation Management at the Hawaiian International Conference on Systems Sciences (HICSS) that will take place in Waikoloa, Big Island, Hawaii from 5-8 January 2009.

This minitrack addresses issues at the crossroads of Technology, Markets and Firms.  We invite new models of both theory and practice in innovation and innovation management. We are particularly interested in studies and research that show how technology was a key enabler for the creation of market and business innovations. We are very interested in panels and tutorials that can present recent examples that highlight both theory and practice in Innovation and Innovation Management.

Further details on the minitrack can be found at www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_42/minitracks/os-iim.htm.

We look forward to seeing you in Hawaii.

Co-chairs: Desai Narasimhalu, Marko Torkkeli, Iain Bitran

ISPIM Research

Dear ISPIM Member,

During the ISPIM Conference in Tours we launched an ISPIM Research Project and asked delegates to complete a short questionnaire concerning the Future of Innovation - "How do innovators see the Future of Innovation?".

We would now like to extend this project to all ISPIM members including those who did not take attend the conference. If you would like to contribute to this research project, please either complete the online questionnaire at www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=yI8B1MAFFJFz8uXtqv56Bw_3d_3d or download the questionnaire here and email it to Ferdinando Chiaromonte, ISPIM's Director of Research at chiaromonte@ispim.org.

I consider your contribution very useful to the continuing discussion on this topic, which is also the them of the ISPIM 2009 Conference in Vienna.
All respondents will, of course, receive the final results of the survey.

Bruce Johnstone graduates with PhD

Bruce Johnstone received his PhD in economics from Auckland University of Technology on 17 October, 2008. Bruce’s doctoral research addressed the problem of how the New Zealand government should support entrepreneurship and innovation through the various knowledge-based or regulatory organisations it owns or funds.  Ethnographic methods were used to examine the relationships between these organisations and an emerging cluster of entrepreneurs involved in the innovative industry of land-based aquaculture in the Gisborne region.  These relationships were examined from the viewpoints of the entrepreneurs and this uncovered patterns of data and findings that have contributed to the discussion surrounding New Zealand’s entrepreneurial environment and innovation framework. This research has implications for policy and practice in economic development and the use of ethnographic methods in studying entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial environments

Bruce Johnstone is now associated with the research organisation, Parnell Group Ltd., and personally specializes in designing and implementing various types of social research including customer research to support innovation using ethnographic methods.  He also manages property investments and advises on property finance in New Zealand.

Bruce, and his wife Janet Johnstone, live normally in New Zealand but base themselves in Europe and the UK for a period each summer.
In addition to his PhD, Bruce holds an MBA from Henley Management College, UK, (international business) and a Bachelor's degree in broadcasting communications. He has other post graduate qualifications in business research and property studies and is a Fellow of the NZ Institute of Management.

Recent publications include:
Johnstone, Bruce A., Ethnographic Methods in Entrepreneurship Research, Handbook of Qualitative Research Methods in Entrepreneurship, Neergaard, H & Ulhøi, J (eds.), Edward Elgar, Cheltenham, UK. 2006 ISBN13 978 1 84376 835 7

And his recent ISPIM conference papers have been:
