Dear Members,

With just over a week to go preparations for the 2009 Conference in Vienna are almost complete and the provisional programme is available at www.conference.ispim.org/index.php/home/programme. I can report that we received outlines from 470 people wanting to present this year. This is therefore the seventh year in a row that has seen an increase. The benefit of this is that the review process and rejection rate could be correspondingly more rigorous to increase the general standard of the sessions.

There will be 208 presentations in Vienna and the total number of ISPIM delegates about 340. At the Tours Conference last year, delegates asked for greater interactivity during sessions. We have therefore adopted a format of 4 x 15 minute presentations followed by 30 minutes of discussion in all regular sessions. We have also increased the number of luminary speakers and workshops on the Wednesday, which should appeal to a broad spectrum of delegates. We hope that with the careful selection of keynote speakers, the increased interactivity in the sessions and more stringent evaluation process the conference will continue to increase in quality.

Forty-four nationalities from six continents will be represented, with the majority being from Europe. Delegate organisations include well-known multinational organisations, SMEs, educational institutions, research centres, public agencies and consulting companies. The most numerous group is educational institutions.

As you may be aware, the R&D Management Conference 2009 will be held in parallel with ISPIM 2009 in Vienna and both sets of delegates are free to switch between sessions. The R&D Management Conference will have about 55 presentations and a similar number of delegates.

The social side of ISPIM Conferences is, as always, very important. Sunday features a town walking tour and welcome reception in the magnificent Vienna City Hall "Rathauskeller". The Conference Dinner on the Monday is at the famous Schönbrunn Palace Orangerie and on Tuesday the Heurigen Feuerwehr Wagner is the traditional setting in the hills above Vienna for the Traditional Viennese Evening. All cuisine, music, activities and venues reflect Viennese culture, gastronomy and history. More details are available from the conference programme.

Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the Conference Awards. The papers that have been short-listed by the Scientific Panel for The Knut Holt Best Paper Award and The Best Student Paper Award are indicated in the programme and will be presented during the Conference Dinner. However, this year we are also awarding delegates for outstanding contributions. Session facilitators will be nominating candidates for outstanding contributions such as questions posed, presentations given, discussion engendered and the like. These awards will be made during the Plenary Session on the Wednesday.

I look forward to seeing you in Vienna on the 21st June.

The 2nd ISPIM Innovation Symposium, New York City, USA

The 2nd ISPIM Innovation Symposium - Stimulating Recovery - The Role of Innovation Management - will be held in New York City, USA on 6-9 December 2009. Organised by ISPIM and hosted by The Fashion Institute of Technology this symposium will bring together academics, business leaders, consultants and other professionals involved in innovation management. The symposium format will include facilitated themed sessions for academic and practitioner presentations together with interactive workshops and discussion panels. Additionally, the symposium will provide excellent networking opportunities together with a taste of local New York culture.

Economies around the world are displaying similar symptoms in a global downturn: profits and investment is disappearing, companies are failing and unemployment is rising. These chaotic and uncertain economic circumstances have required companies and governments to define and implement innovative actions to ensure survival and stimulate recovery.

High uncertainty calls for creative and innovative management. Consumers and businesses still have needs, but what are the best ways to address them? How do we develop such creative strategies? What innovative solutions deal with today's problems and still strengthen business and economic innovation in the long run? How should we manage innovation in the current climate? Those companies and governments that can answer these questions will not only survive the economic crisis, but will emerge in a strengthened strategic position as recovery takes root.

The XXI ISPIM Conference, Bilbao, Spain

The 2010 ISPIM Conference - The Dynamics of Innovation - will be held in Bilbao, Spain on 6-9 June 2010. Organised by ISPIM and hosted by Innobasque, the Basque Innovation Agency, this conference will bring together academics, business leaders, consultants and other professionals involved in innovation management. The conference format will include facilitated themed sessions for academic and practitioner presentations together with interactive workshops and discussion panels. Additionally, the conference will provide excellent networking opportunities together with a taste of local Basque culture.

Stimulating and managing innovation is a journey into the unknown that requires dynamic capabilities for a dynamic environment. Customers are unable to articulate their ever changing needs, new technologies are promising but not proven, production facilities are still untested and in development, and organisations have to be made ready for change when no destination but only a direction is known. Innovation is a continuous process to meet vague, ambiguous and contradicting requirements, where budgets and time schedules are always strict. The dynamics of this process call for leadership, well-trained and motivated participants, evolving business models, the right partnerships and the use of new virtual tools. Innovation management may look like managing the unmanageable, but it is a real world challenge to ensure future competitive strength of companies, governments and regions.

Conference Sub-themes:

Submissions from academics, consultants and managers on innovation-related topics are strongly encouraged and should focus on the following:

  • Collaboration for innovation
  • Commercialising and financing innovation
  • Culture & diversity management in innovation
  • Entrepreneurship, intrapreneurship and venturing
  • Innovating business models and value creation
  • Innovation training & education
  • Leaders for innovation
  • Managing virtual innovation
  • Measuring and managing innovation
  • Methods and tools for innovation
  • Networks and clusters of innovation
  • Organizational creativity & idea generation
  • Regional innovation and global competitiveness
  • Stimulating regional innovation

Important Deadlines:

  • 31 December 2009: Outlines Only (Either Academic Papers or Practitioner Presentations)
  • 31 January 2010: Acceptance Notification
  • 23 April 2010: Final Submissions (including full papers, slides, profiles & photos) together with registration and payment

From 21 June 2009, the conference website will be www.conference.ispim.org.

New Book by Keith Bevis: Sustainable Learning in the Workplace

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the publication of Sustainable Learning in the Workplace. Skills are a major contribution to a company’s success. We all know that we need more, better and newer skills in the workplace, but so much training, however well intended lacks any impact on the business. If the learning has not been sustained by being embedded in the business, the investment in training can be wasted.

This book reviews training activity among manufacturers within the automotive supply chain, particularly from the perspective of the smaller companies and the trainees themselves. A model is developed that focuses attention on the value of the learning. Criteria are identified to support the model as a Framework for Sustainable Learning.

The companies most likely to meet these quantifiable criteria will be the competitive and innovative companies that operate as learning organisations. It is argued that training targeted on these companies will be cost effective to implement, provide measurable performance benefits and deliver sustainable learning.

This Framework should be especially useful to company managers or advisers in skills brokerage who are seeking to optimise the investment in skills development. This is an academic monograph based on my research.

The book “Sustainable Learning in the Workplace”, by Keith Bevis, ISBN number 978-3-639-14437-6, is published by VDM in Germany

Regards,

Keith

Call for Papers: Symposium on Support for Open Innovation Processes

Open Innovation is a recent paradigm whose goal is to include external and internal ideas and paths to market for innovation. In Open Innovation, networks of innovators which consist of organizations, freelancers, customers etc. collaborate in different phases of the innovation process such as idea generation, evaluation and/or development. The induced new collaboration possibilities allow for considering a larger amount of users, projects and more general aspects of innovation. For this reason, the innovation process becomes broader and more complex. Effectively supporting this process (e.g. via IT) is therefore very important in order to foster or even make collaboration possible in innovator networks. The support of an Open Innovation network or community can include support for the process itself, the awareness or the search for desired content, contributions or new innovation partners, trends in personal qualification and skill management, awareness of people's contributions and team recommendations. The symposium goal is to illustrate and discuss the phenomenon of Open Innovation itself and possible theoretical or practical approaches for the support of its requirements as well as socio-psychological implications, influence factors and future development paths of Open Innovation.

Context of the symposium: KoPIWA (www.kopiwa.de) is a project on the support of network based Open Innovation processes and development of competencies in the digital economy sector by knowledge modeling and analysis. Goals of the KoPIWA project are investigating concepts for trendspotting, awareness and network analysis as well as supporting the development of competencies in the Open Innovation context. Collaborations between organizations, freelancers and customers of the digital economical sector are supported. KoPIWA is a project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with funds from the European Social Fund (ESF,50%) (project number 01FM07067-72).

Important Dates

  • August, 31st 2009: Submission deadline
  • October, 16th 2009: Notification of acceptance
  • December, 7th 2009: Symposium

Paper Submission: Book Project

As a result of this symposium, the publication of a book on Open Innovation is intended. The publication will be guided and supported by the KoPIWA project team. Accepted contributions for the symposium are abstracts for a chapter in this book. These contributions are going to be extended, broadened and written out in full by their respective authors and are going to be published together in this book. Thus, the scientific community is invited to submit an abstract for a book chapter due to August, 31st 2009. The book chapter abstract (minimum length 2 pages, maximum length 4 pages) is to be submitted in the ACM Sig proceedings format (www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates).
