Dear Member,

The Bilbao Conference is only three months away and things are shaping up nicely. Support from Innobasque, the Basque Innovation Agency, our local host, has been excellent and the programme will reflect that. You may not have looked at the flyer or programme in a while, but a quick glance will illustrate what we believe to be the strongest keynote, plenary and workshop line-up to date. Of course a visit to Bilbao would be incomplete without a trip to the Guggenheim Museum, where our Gala dinner is to be held thanks to the generous support of BBVA.

http://conference.ispim.org/index.php/home/programme
http://conference.ispim.org/files/XXI_ISPIM_Flyer.pdf

Turning to the parallel sessions, we had 390 people from 51 countries respond to the call for papers. The most popular themes were Managing and Measuring Innovation, Collaborative Innovation, and Methods and Tools for Innovation. Submissions had a stronger focus on applied research and project outcomes than in previous years. In terms of submissions, Spain and Finland led the way followed by Germany, the UK and the USA. With only 172 slots available, the Scientific Panel had to disappoint a great number of authors. However, with all Outlines being evaluated by 2, 3 or 4 panel members, we believe the rigorous process should result in the most insightful and stimulating submissions being chosen. We look forward to receiving the completed submissions from the authors by 23 April.

The social and networking side of the conference is, as always, very important. A walking tour on the Sunday afternoon includes a look at the historic centre of Bilbao and how it has successfully transformed its industrial core. The walk starts and finishes at the Edificio Ensanche, which hosts the Welcome Reception. The Gala Dinner on the Monday is at the world-famous Bilbao Guggenheim Museum (yes, a free private look at the galleries is included for delegates) and on Tuesday the Azurmendi Restaurant & Txakoli Wine Cellar, run by Michelin star chef Eneko Atxa will bring a taste of traditional Basque cuisine and culture to the conference. More details are available from the conference programme online.

I look forward to seeing you in Bilbao on the 6th June.

New ISPIM Administrator

The growth in events and membership over the past five years has significantly increased the administrative burden on the Society. Following our advertising in previous editions of the Newsletter and elsewhere I am pleased to announce that David Farrell (farrell@ispim.org) has been selected to take this position on a permanent part-time basis. You will meet him in person in Bilbao, although I have no doubt most people will have reason to be in contact with him before then. (Steffen Conn)

The 2nd ISPIM Innovation Symposium, New York City, USA
Review by Bruno Woeran, Deputy Chair, ISPIM Advisory Board

The second in a new series of The International Society for Professional Innovation Management (ISPIM) December symposia was being held at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York to complement the annual European-based June conference. The ever increasing interest of innovation constituents, served at large by ISPIM topics, shows the necessary demand to reach out across borders in order to tackle today’s Role of Innovation Management, also the theme of this symposium. Dr. Lisa Braverman, Dean of FIT’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies and Center for Innovation Management, hosted over 180 delegates at the ideal location in the fashion district, located between downtown Manhattan, the newly redeveloped Meatpackers District and Times Square.

The intention of the symposium – giving more space to discussion and interaction than usual at traditional conferences, paired with excellent and concise presenters and key note speakers gave this perfectly organized event once again the framework for three successful days of workshops, sessions and networking social functions. Each session featured a dedicated facilitator with the purpose to make the connection between short paper presentations and engaging the audience in reflection on what had been presented and how it related to the theme of the symposium, “Stimulating Recovery - The Role of Innovation Management”. The feedback received indicated once again that delegates appreciated the opportunity to engage more pro-actively with fellow delegates. It is foreseen to adopt this approach also for the next ISPIM symposium to be held in December of 2010.

The three-day event included twenty-five themed sessions containing 100 presentations that were selected from 190 submissions as well as 3 workshops. In addition to those paper sessions and workshops, the symposium enjoyed hearing plenary speakers from ISPIM ABCs (worldwide network of academics, business leaders, consultants and other professionals involved in Innovation Management).

The symposium programme kicked off with an impressive keynote and plenary speaker lineup including Dr Rita Gunther McGrath of Columbia Business School on "Growth in Uncertain Times", Debra M Amidon of ENTOVATION International Ltd featuring "The Trapeze Parable: Challenges for Innovation Performance", Gina O'Connor of Lally School of Management & Technology with her insight on "Breakthrough Innovation in Good Times and Bad", as well as the opening panel discussion on "Stimulating Recovery" moderated by James D Thompson of The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

Further plenary speaker and panel discussions included Alan G Robinson of Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts on "How World Class Organizations Manage Innovation Through Employee Ideas" and "Innovation = Recovery: Are you ready or just talking about it?" moderated by Jeff Hovis of Product Genesis and Joanne Hyland of The Radical Innovation Group.

All the effort and preparation that goes into every ISPIM event in order to provide an excellent platform for participants on knowledge exchange, discussion and interaction, therefore also values a strong focus on networking and social interaction. This was once again carried forward and started with a Welcome Reception & Delegate Registration at The Hard Rock Café on Times Square, followed by the Monday Night Dinner Cruise around Lower Manhattan and The Statue of Liberty on the Spirit of New York and a New York Evening at The Empire State Building on Tuesday, including a Visit to the 86th floor Observatory and Dinner at the Heartland Brewery, where vowels for eternal networking were exchanged by ISPIM Member Mikko Järvilehto who proposed to his girlfriend Viivi – and she said YES - now they can!

The happy couple - Mikko Järvilehto and new fiancé Viivi!

The Knut Holt Award for Best Paper went to Kristina Jespersen, Aarhus University, Denmark: “User-involvement and open innovation: The case of decision- maker openness” and The Symposium Best Student Paper Award went to Katja Hutter & Julia Hautz, University of Innsbruck, Austria: “What motivates and hinders employees to engage in internal innovation communities?”

The professional line-up of all ISPIM events provides the backbone of their success and quality thereof. An ever-growing interest attracts more delegates and hence increases also the paper rejection rate. The resulting high level of publications stemming from two events in two different parts of the globe each year has not only increased the organization’s workload, but is now providing more opportunities for those interested in innovation to exchange, discuss and take home. With this we are looking forward to the next event in Bilbao, which will be as equally stimulating and gratifying for those able to participate.

Workshop: Writing Academic Papers

A hands-on workshop on academic writing will be organized in the weekend before the ISPIM Conference in Bilbao, on June 5-6. Following the format of the successful 2007-2009 workshops, workshop chair Dr. Eelko Huizingh will present and discuss the essential elements of academic writing in an interactive setting. Delegates of the ISPIM Conference get a discount of 100 euros for this two-day workshop.

Many researchers are well able to complete research projects but struggle with the process of writing sound academic papers. They usually acquire writing skills through a lengthy process of trial and error. Dedicated teaching and training in writing skills enables them to shorten the learning process considerably. That is what this workshop offers.

Two Projects in Progress from Bologna (Italy)

FEPIC: the final countdown

FEPIC (Female Engineering Pushing Innovation in Companies), the EU project coordinated by the University of Bologna (already mentioned in Issue 2009/1), is now in its final phase aiming at producing a multi-lingual free e-training tool based on themes such as leadership and creativity. After an open seminar organized in November 2009 by the Italian FEPIC Student Focus Group in order to disseminate the results of the workshops on Creativity and Leadership held in Bologna in April, the project partners and the students Focus groups from 7 countries flew to Malta to discuss the content of the training tool to be published online by July 2010. In this phase of the project, company managers from any countries are invited to fill in the online questionnaire dealing with creativity and leadership which is available at FEPIC project website www.fepic.eu at the link: Take FEPIC's survey. The project website and the questionnaire are available in 7 languages. The results of the transnational survey will be made available on the FEPIC website as well.

Nina: bringing innovation into new areas

The University of Bologna is currently involved as partner in the EU funded project Nina (New Innovations in New Areas), coordinated by the University of Halmstad (Sweden), aiming at offering female students in Health Care and Teaching Faculties a training programme to empower their attitude towards entrepreneurship and funding innovative companies. In the experience of the partner countries, start up a company is usually a choice not considered by students from these faculties, even more when they are female. The project is a way to sensitize the girls on this topic, opening them the way to an unforeseen career. Twelve female students from the Faculty of Teaching of the University of Bologna were offered 4 half day seminars focused on: Being an entrepreneur, generating idea, soft skills, business plan. The seminars were coordinated by the University of Bologna representative in the project: Miretta.

Call for Papers: Special issue on "Measuring the Impact of Service innovations"

Call for Papers for International Journal of Services Technology and Management (IJSTM). Guest Editors: Prof Hannu Rantanen and Dr Helena Forsman.

The ongoing trend from the production of goods towards that of services has given rise to an increasing body of research examining service innovations. Despite the growing number of studies, current literature provides only fragmentary insights into the relationship between service innovation and business performance. The goal of this special issue is to add our knowledge through three aspects of how to measure the impact of service innovations on performance. First, it intends to introduce the systems, methods and indicators to measure the impact of service innovations on performance. Second, it provides empirical evidence on how the above tools have been used in practice and what kinds of interconnections have been found between service innovations and business performance. Third, it aims to provide a basis for evaluating the relevant approaches to managing service innovation performance in organisations. Qualitative and quantitative as well as conceptual approaches defining, understanding and managing service innovation performance in enterprises or in public organisations are appropriate and appreciated.

Important deadlines:
Submission deadline: 30 September 2010
