Dear Member,
It’s been over 3 weeks since the Bilbao conference which has given me some time to reflect on the event itself. The bar was set very high in Vienna in 2009 but I believe that we were able to maintain the high standards we set ourselves and also add some variety to the conference programme with the introduction of panel discussions and special interest groups. This year we again had some excellent keynote and luminary speakers. The overall quality of papers and presentations is improving year by year and our scientific panel deserves a great deal of credit for the amount of effort they put in.
Later in this newsletter Rob Dew has written his review of the Bilbao conference so all I would like to say in this editorial is a big thank you to everyone involved who helped raise the bar yet again. I would also like to congratulate the best paper winners, José Maria Barrutia & Carmen Echebarria for "Social capital-innovation relationship in the European regions" who won the Knut Holt Award for Best Conference Paper and Tor Helge Aas for "Implementing a Value Assessment Tool for Service Innovation Ideas" who won the Conference Best Student Paper Award.
So on to the future...the next event will be the 3rd ISPIM Innovation Symposium which will be held in Quebec City, Canada from 12-15 December 2010. Yes I know it will be -20 degrees outside but the Canadians can cope with snow and the venue, hotel and virtually all the social events are connected with underground passages. How they must laugh when they hear about traffic chaos in London caused by 1mm of snow! The title of the symposium is “Managing the Art of Innovation: Turning Concepts into Reality” and the event will be run in collaboration with INO, a leading non-profit R&D centre. The venue is the award winning Québec City Convention Centre which is located just by the walls of the old city. For social events, the gala dinner will take place in the magnificent Québec Parliament Building, home of the National Assembly of Québec and the Québec Evening at Le Cabaret du Capitole. I look forward to welcoming many of you to Quebec in December.
The next conference will take place in Hamburg, Germany from 12-15 June 2011. The title of the conference is “Sustainability in Innovation: Innovation Management Challenges” which was the topic of the final discussion panel that was led by John Bessant in Bilbao. The event will be hosted by The Technical University of Hamburg and programme highlights include the Gala Dinner at the 19th Century Börsenhalle (Hamburg Exchange), a Dinner Cruise on the River Elbe and a visit to Visit to Airbus Deutschland. The conference website is now online at http://conference.ispim.org.
I would like to end this editorial by saying it was a great pleasure to be able to honour two of ISPIM’s long-standing members. Professor Kazuyoshi Ishii and Professor Markku Tuominen were both given the ISPIM Fellowship Award at the Gala Dinner at the Guggenheim Bilbao and we look forward to them continuing to attend ISPIM events. For Professor Ishii it was his 25th year of attending ISPIM events (yes, I know we just had the 21st conference but they used to take place every 2 years...) and he was presented with a framed disc of his favourite karaoke song - "Love Me Tender" by Elvis!
For those of you in the northern hemisphere, have a great summer and for those of you in the southern hemisphere just remember your summers are generally better than ours!
Best regards,

Iain Bitran

The 3rd ISPIM Innovation Symposium - Managing the Art of Innovation: Turning Concepts into Reality - will be held in Quebec City, Canada on 12-15 December 2010. Organised by ISPIM in collaboration with local partner INO, a leading non-profit R&D center in Optics/Photonics in Canada, this symposium will bring together academics, business leaders, consultants and other professionals involved in innovation management. The symposium format will include facilitated themed sessions for academic and practitioner presentations together with interactive workshops and discussion panels. Additionally, the symposium will provide excellent networking opportunities together with a taste of local French Canadian culture.
Innovation is of all ages, industries and countries. By systematically analyzing innovation processes we have learned a lot about effective innovation strategies. Out of the box thinking, portfolio management, open innovation, team diversity and many other innovation concepts have emerged. Explaining each of these is easy, applying them is much harder.
How to invent breakthrough products? How to determine the potential of a new technology for which no market yet exists? How to collaborate with other organisations without losing your own unique strengths? How to ensure that necessary, multiple perspectives are considered when creating new market offerings? The reality is that innovation is partly an art, but it is an art that organisations need to manage, and by doing so they turn innovation concepts into reality.
Submissions from academic, research, industry, intermediary and policy organisations are strongly encouraged and should focus on the following:

XXI ISPIM Conference, Bilbao, Spain - 6 to 9 June 2010
Review by Rob Dew, Queensland University of Technology, Australia & Member of the ISPIM Advisory Board

ISPIM XXI: The Dynamics of Innovation was held in Bilbao, Spain and was an amazing event. Like other ISPIM annual conferences the event was attended by corporate innovation managers, innovation consultants and academics. This year there were in excess of 360 delegates from 51 countries. The standard of presentations was excellent, both because of the high quality of luminary speakers and the fact that only half of the papers submitted to the conference were accepted and then presented. Keynote speakers Joe Tidd [Professor, Technology & Innovation Management Science & Technology Policy Research Unit (SPRU), University of Sussex] and Matt Kingdon [Chairman, Co-Founder & Chief Enthusiast ?What If! The Innovation Company] provided startlingly compatible messages about innovation despite their very different innovation backgrounds. As an innovation journal editor Joe presented a summary of the research in the innovation field to date. He asserted that an innovation process focus is far more important than R&D for product development. Only 1 in 8 firms have an innovation process but these firms create twice the value of the other firms. Importantly 85% of the Western world economy is NOT high tech and 70% of it is service-based. He went on to say that R&D is also not appropriate for the Public Sector. Instead the alternative is small but scalable trial and error. His examples included the so-called Gazelle firms (the 4% of firms that grow amazingly fast and consistently) typically don’t do R&D. These firms typically are service sector firms practicing a systematic trial and error process.
Matt Kingdon shared his organisation’s formula for innovation: Identify x Insight x Ideas x Implement = Innovation. Key for Matt in this formula was that if any of the elements are zero, the output is zero. He went on to present some very interesting case studies in innovation that really seemed to be about a clever trial and error process. He finished with some assumptions about innovation worth challenging:
These two opening presentations set the theme for the rest of the conference around innovation dynamics and unpacking the state of the art in terms of practice. There was a prevalence of papers this year that related to the importance of people inside the organisation that were trying to manage innovation. Interesting discoveries were shared about the environments that such people needed to operate in and the kind of people likely to be involved. Measurement, performance, collaboration (inside and outside the firm) were also important themes. By day, delegates were immersed in a wide range of interesting research findings and by night the informal parts of the ISPIM conference came to life.
Tours of the wonderful city of Bilbao ensured that finding great Pinchos in the old town was a snap. The Gala Dinner in the Guggenheim museum was astounding not only for the incredible exhibits by Anish Kapoor and Henri Rousseau, but also because of the wonderful architecture of the museum itself. Included in the evenings feast were a memorable dish prepared with black squid ink and the wonderful Cava produced in the Barcelona region. However, the pick of the wine was the Rioja. This was much enjoyed during the ‘Basque Evening’ at the Azurmendi Restaurant & Txakoli Wine Cellar. The evening continued late into the night with the enjoyable live music provided by the same Portuguese band that has played for conference delegates since Porto, Portugal in 2005. With just about everyone enjoying the dancing, the restaurant staff had to gently insist on the evening coming to an end eventually.

The ISPIM Board with the 2 new ISPIM Fellows, Professors Ishii & Tuominen
Congratulations to the ISPIM Board and organising team for delivering such a great event once again. Having been to ISPIM every year since Warsaw, Poland in 2006 I can say with authority that the ISPIM ‘formula’ works: diverse international delegates from industry, consulting and academia, high quality papers, interesting cities, seamless organisation and great celebrations after hours. I can’t wait for Hamburg in 2011, so I just might be at the Symposium in Quebec later this year…
Cheers,

Rob Dew

I’ve always believed in a fundamental unity of creation, which could make peace between the warring ideologies on ‘how things really are’. But few tools of western science and philosophy see the world as whole. Buddhist Technologies, on the other hand, assume everything fits and their logical, repeatable methods are designed to help people overcome conflicts and develop their highest potential – a natural state of creativity, compassion and joy. Naturally, any journey to make a practical, integrated model of the sciences and religion is eclectic: A BSc (Chemistry) and MSc (Structural Geology), as well degrees in Music and Journalism helped me find patterns. Ten years consulting and lecturing in Universities and multi-national corporations forced me to logical explanations. Finally, a 3-year project comparing Engineering (TRIZ principles) and Biological Design complemented my research on the mechanics of creation in 11 disciplines and led to a map of ‘how-all-things-create’. This project was voted ‘Nationally-leading and Internationally-competitive’ by referees from the UK government. The resulting ‘Innovation Map’ is at the core of what my company does. With 11 colleagues, I use it to spearhead and develop sustainable, bottom-up Innovation in corporations in US, Europe and Australia. Our public programme with NGO partners motivates young people to make a difference in the world. Nearly two thousand people have trained in the method and estimated billions of pounds worth of improvements have been made with our help. My book on ‘Innovation in the Mirror of the World’ will be finished in early 2010.
